Zhengyi, the Witch-King of Vaasa, was the author of most of the region’s recent problems. Although his origins are unknown, the Witch-King first appeared in Vaasa in the Year of the Bright Blade (1347 DR), raising his fortress and seat of power, Castle Perilous from the bare rocks of a lonely crag near the Great Glacier. Claiming the “sovereign powers of the Kingdom of Vaasa” (which the Heralds deny ever existed), he raised an army united goblins, orcs and giants and used it to conquer first Vaasa, then Damara. From later evidence, it appears that he planned to use the region as a base to sweep through Narfell, Impiltur and Thesk to threaten the rich lands of the Sea of Fallen Stars.
The Witch-King was not a common sight for any of his subjects. His orders were carried out through a series of trusted lieutenants, most of whom died during the rebellion. He is known to have been a powerful mage, and his strong ties to Orcus and the undead have suggested that he was a lich. He also displayed high skills in enchantment and conjuration magics.
Zhengyi disappeared during Gareth Dragonbane’s invasion of Vaasa and, despite numerous rumours to the contrary, there have been no confirmed sightings of him. It is usually assumed that he was destroyed when Castle Perilous collapsed after Orcus’ defeat.
